American Female, 1:15, 2012

In “American Female,” as balloons are popped, women are gradually reduced to just one dimension: physical attractiveness. This video was inspired by statistics that show how female value in our society lies solely in beauty and sexuality.

Artist Cat Del Buono began drawing and filming at an early age, making her first film at age 11.  She received a BA from Boston College, MFA from SVA, and attended NYU’s graduate film program. Trained as a photographer and filmmaker, Del Buono now focuses on creating video installations and public happenings that focus on gender issues. Her works have shown in galleries and museums world wide, including Fountain Art Fair, Fonlad Digtial Arts Festival Portugal, 5th Base Gallery London, 6th Street Container Miami, Museum of Contemporary Art of Vojvodina in Serbia, and the Mordes Collection. Awards include Winner of the Baang & Burne New Works Grant, Awesome Foundation Grant, NYFA Strategic Stipend, Miami Masterminds Honorable Mention, FEAST Miami Finalist, SVA Alumni Association award, and residencies at ArtCenter Miami and Gallery La Pan Barcelona.
